Resources are scarce in some areas and abundant in others, making settlement placement an essential part of running a successful base. Players can also build their own settlements from basic farms in the wilderness to huge fortresses with giant metal walls and crossbow emplacements for defense. Scattered around the wasteland of Kenshi are various factions that have settlements in which the player can either trade with or attack depending on their standing with the faction. Where Kenshi especially shines is its base building and economy mechanics. Unconscious characters can either be rescued by fellow squad members and carried to safety to be healed, or captured by the enemy. Severed limbs can be replaced by cybernetics - which may even augment a character’s natural abilities.
Furthermore, limbs can be crippled and severed, and wounds can bleed - leading to blood loss, which can cause the character to eventually pass out. Swords have real weight to them, and using larger weapons allows the player to cleave through multiple enemies.ĭamage is calculated based on where a weapon lands on the body, what part of the weapon actually hit, and how hard the weapon was swung based on an RPG stat system. The player essentially drives their own story in the world of Kenshi, and the choices are truly endless. In fact, most of the lore is discovered by reading item descriptions and finding books among ancient ruins. Just how open world is Kenshi? Aside from some basic lore choices for the origin of the player during character creation, there is very little in the way of narrative.
